Augmented Reality Demo

Nothing generates buzz like a slick proof of concept. For Microstrategy World, an annual BI showcase event, my development colleague and I put together a demo piece which showed a glimpse of the future of Business Intelligence. Although this was mainly for marketing purposes, everything you see in the finished product did actually work.

Tasks & Challenges

• Create a slick interface which incorporates very basic and readily identifiable retail items.
• Feature visualizations, metrics in an interactive way.
• Handoff creative to a video professional and art direct production through completion.

The Design Process

• We discussed the project and put together a script for the demo.
• I produced a quick digital prototype concept.
• I researched many different AR apps and we ultimately decided to go the Hollywood route. We chose Ironman.
• Ironman's Head's Up Display (HUD) is an established cool factor, which I knew we could replicate.
• As cool as it is, the HUD for Ironman is grounded in reality. All of the UI elements are based on real life metrics and we wanted to pattern our design off of that.
• In my second prototype, I rendered out a far length image recognition scan UI, and then a close-up Augmented Reality product inventory interface.
• After getting buy-in from management, we worked with a video designer, where I handed off creative and helped art direct the project to completion.

Results

• In the world of numbers and bar charts, seeing something like this basically dropped the jaws of the entire crowd, enabling our salesforce to grab some clients.
